The City now knows more about e-bike, bicycle, and pedestrian safety concerns around Dos Pueblos High School (DPHS) following a May 27th workshop on campus. The purpose of the get-together was to gather input on future pedestrian and bicycle safety improvements in the area. The focus was on student travel routes to and from DPHS. This area generally includes the corridor bounded by Storke Road/Glen Annie Road to the east, the US 101/Cathedral Oaks overcrossing to the west, Cathedral Oaks Road to the north, and Santa Felicia Drive to the south.
California Walks (CalWalks) and UC Berkeley SafeTREC hosted the Community Pedestrian and Bicycle Safety Training (CPBST) Workshop which was funded through the California Office of Traffic Safety. Attendees included area residents, Dos Pueblos High School staff and students, Goleta City Council members and representatives from the City of Goleta, Santa Barbara Association of Government (SBCAG) and MOVE Santa Barbara County.
The Workshop began with a presentation by CalWalks and SafeTREC that included an overview of the Community Pedestrian and Bicycle Safety Program, Vision Zero principles, the Safe System Approach to eliminating collisions resulting in serious injuries or fatalities, and collision data from 2019–2025, including locations and trends associated with fatal and serious injury collisions. Attendees provided valuable feedback throughout the presentation regarding safety concerns, travel behavior, and personal experiences.
Thank you to everyone who attended and provided feedback. The final step in the CPBST program effort will be the development of the project report, expected within the next few months. This final report will summarize existing conditions, collision data, community input, and recommended implementation projects.
