March is Women’s History Month

Please join the City of Goleta in recognizing Women’s History Month this March.

Women’s History Month is an annual observance that recognizes the vital role women have played in shaping our history and society. Originating from International Women’s Day in the early 20th century, it became a formal celebration in the United States in 1987, following a petition by the National Women’s History Project.

Women’s History Month is not just about celebrating the successes of the past but also acknowledging the struggles and challenges women have faced and continue to face today. From the fight for equal rights to ongoing battles for representation and equity, the journey has been long and often difficult.

To learn more about the rich social, political, and cultural impact of women in history, make sure you check out the Goleta Valley Library in-person Women’s History display and explore the library’s online catalog throughout the month of March.

Let’s embrace this month with enthusiasm and gratitude for the women who have shaped our history and continue to influence our present and future. Together, let’s make history by sharing our stories and inspiring each other every day!

CHP Officer Ayala Recognized for Heroic Efforts

California Highway Patrol Officer Ricardo Ayala is a hero in our books. The first responder was awarded a Certificate of Recognition from the City of Goleta at the February 18 City Council meeting for his bravery following a small plane crash on January 29.

While conducting a routine enforcement stop on the 101 near Los Carneros in Goleta, Officer Ayala heard an explosion followed by a small plane crashing near Glen Annie Road. He immediately rushed to the crash site, hopped a chain link freeway perimeter fence, sprinted towards the burning plane and pulled the injured pilot from the wreckage. As they pulled a few yards from safety, flames engulfed the plane.

Captain Michael Logie, Ayala’s commanding officer, said “I’m very proud of him, the moment and the acts that he did, without even thinking, just responding and reacting based on his training, who he is as a person, to go and save two people’s lives.”

After a standing ovation from the City Council and members of the public at the meeting, CHP Officer Ayala’s humble nature shone through, “Thank you all. I was just doing my job,” he said.

All of City Council had the opportunity to thank CHP Officer Ayala for his actions. “I bet you think you’re not a hero, but we know you are,” said Mayor Perotte. “You’re my hero. You’re our hero.”

Thank you, CHP Officer Ayala, for your selflessness and dedication. You are a shining example of what it means to serve and protect.

Zip Book Program Resumes

Beloved Program Boosts Access to Titles at the Goleta & Santa Ynez Valley Libraries

Zip Books are back! The popular program allows patrons with a Goleta & Santa Ynez Valley Libraries card in good standing to request books or audiobooks to be mailed directly to their home from Amazon. Zip Books are purchased with grant funds made available through the California State Library. For the 2024/2025 fiscal year period, the City of Goleta’s Library Services Division was awarded $15,327 in California Library Services Act funds to purchase books in print, large print, and audiobook CD formats.

Sharon Nigh, Library Assistant and Zip Books Coordinator, said, “The Zip Books program is a well-loved resource because it helps patrons access the books they want, even if they are not currently in our collection.”

To be eligible for the Zip Books Program, requests must meet these criteria:

  • Title is not already owned by the Goleta Valley Library, Solvang Library, Buellton Library, Bookvan, or other Black Gold Cooperative member libraries.
  • Title must be available from Amazon or an Amazon bookseller for less than $50 in Print or Large Print formats, or less than $75 in Book on CD format.
  • Requests are limited to two books per household per month.
  • If the requested title is already in the Black Gold system, a courtesy hold will be placed on the item.

A recent update to the program is that Zip Books now have a due date of three months from the date they are requested. When you’re finished with your Zip Books, simply return them to your home library in-person at the service desk so that they can be checked in. Please note that Zip Books returned in the book drops will not be checked in and the cost of unreturned Zip Books will be charged to borrowers’ accounts. The library welcomes returns of Zip Books from prior program years, as well.

The Zip Books Request Form is available here. You’ll surely fall in love with this great program!

Questions may be sent to zipbooks@cityofgoleta.org. Explore GoletaValleyLibrary.org for up-to-date information about our services, programs, and events.

This Project is supported in whole or in part by funding provided by the State of California, administered by the California State Library.

Spring and Flood Safety Month

As spring approaches, Southern California undergoes a breathtaking transformation with blooming flowers and vibrant greenery. However, this season also brings unpredictable weather patterns and potential flood risks. Here are some essential flood safety tips from the City of Goleta’s Emergency Services Coordinator Jason Levy to keep you and your loved ones safe this spring:

Understanding the Risks

Southern California’s geography, coupled with occasional intense rainfall, increases the likelihood of flash floods and mudslides. Being aware of these risks is the first step in staying safe. Monitor local weather reports and be vigilant during heavy rainstorms.

Prepare in Advance

  • Create an Emergency Kit: Ensure your kit includes essentials such as bottled water, non-perishable food, first-aid supplies, flashlights, batteries, and important documents in a waterproof container. Learn more about how to build your own kit here.
  • Know Your Evacuation Routes: Familiarize yourself with local routes and have a plan in place in case you need to leave your home quickly. Learn more about how to create a plan here.

Stay Informed

  • Sign Up for Alerts: Register for local emergency alerts to receive real-time information about severe weather and flood warnings. The County’s central alerting tool is Ready SBC, sign up today.
  • Keep Updated: Follow local news channels, and consider installing weather apps on your mobile devices for instant updates.

During a Flood

  • Avoid Floodwaters: Never attempt to walk, swim, or drive through floodwaters. Just six inches of moving water can knock you off your feet, and one foot of water can sweep a vehicle away.
  • Move to Higher Ground: If floodwaters are rising around your home, seek higher ground or move to an upper floor if evacuation isn’t possible.

After the Flood

  • Wait for Official Clearance: Only return home when authorities have declared it safe to do so.
  • Inspect Your Property: Check for structural damage and be cautious of potential electrical hazards. Document any damage for insurance purposes.

Community Resilience

By working together and supporting one another, we can enhance our community’s resilience to floods. Participate in local emergency preparedness programs and share these tips with your neighbors.

Let’s enjoy the beauty of spring while staying safe and prepared for whatever weather may come our way.
