Back to School Safety Tips

Watch Video Message

It’s a new school year, and the City of Goleta would like to remind parents and children of some important safety tips. Start by checking out this informative Back to School Safety Video Message from Goleta Community Resource Deputy George Hedricks that includes information on establishing routes to school, avoiding strangers, and teaching children about safely using social media and the internet. A full list of “25 Ways to Make Kids Safer” is available here.

Below are some additional tips to help keep everyone safe during the new school year:

Walking to School

  • Leave early enough to arrive at school at least 10 minutes prior to the start of school.
  • Always use public sidewalks and streets when walking to school. If there is no sidewalk, walk as far to the edge of the road as possible, facing traffic.
  • We all learned as kids to “look both ways before crossing the street.” This remains important advice, for both children and adults.
  • When crossing, make eye contact with drivers and always cross the street at intersections or in crosswalks.
  • Teach your child to recognize and obey traffic signals, signs, and pavement markings.

Biking to School

  • ALWAYS wear a properly fitted helmet.
  • Obey the rules of the road; the rules are the same for all vehicles, including bicycles.
  • Always stay on the right-hand side of the road and ride in the same direction as traffic.
  • Be sure your child knows and uses all of the appropriate hand signals.
  • Ride single file on the right side of the road, with the flow of traffic. Stop at all stop signs and walk bikes across the street.

Driving to School

  • When driving your child to school, stay alert and never drive while distracted.
  • Always obey school zone speed limits and watch for children crossing the street. Remember, the area 10 feet around a school bus is most dangerous for children.
  • NEVER pass a bus loading or unloading children. It is also important to learn and follow your school’s drop-off and pick-up procedures.
  • Washing your car can be an easily overlooked task, but driving toward the morning sun with a dirty windshield can be blinding. To make certain you can see children walking and riding to school, make sure your windshield is clean, especially during morning school drop-off hours.

We wish everyone a safe and happy school year!

September is CA Pedestrian Safety Month

Pedestrian Safety Starts with You: Stay Alert to Protect People Walking

September is California Pedestrian Safety Month. The Goleta Police Department would like to remind drivers to slow down and be alert for people walking on our roads. By always taking extra precautions, you can help protect pedestrians and reduce the risk of crashes and injuries. Walking should always be an easy and safe option for getting around any community.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 7,314 pedestrians were killed in traffic crashes across the United States in 2023. In California alone, 1,106 pedestrians were struck and killed on California roads in 2023, accounting for 27 percent of all traffic-related fatalities in the state. The high number of pedestrians injured and killed on our roads highlights the urgent need for increased awareness and safety measures for people walking.

“Pedestrian safety should be every driver’s priority.” Sergeant Noel Rivas said. “Safety begins with you, whether you’re behind the wheel or on foot. Slowing down, putting away distractions and yielding at crosswalks, can make a life-saving difference.”

The Goleta Police Department offers safe driving and walking tips, including staying off the phone when behind the wheel or walking.

Drivers

  • Do not speed, and slow down at intersections. Be prepared to stop for pedestrians at marked and unmarked crosswalks.
  • Avoid blocking crosswalks while waiting to make a right-hand turn.
  • Never drive impaired.

Pedestrians

  • Be predictable. Use signalized crosswalks where drivers may anticipate foot traffic.
  • Watch for approaching vehicles and practice due care crossing the street. At 30 mph, a driver needs at least 90 feet to stop.
  • Make it easier for drivers to see you at night – consider wearing bright colors, reflective material, or use a flashlight when practical.
  • Be careful crossing streets or entering crosswalks at night or on busier streets with higher speed limits.

Scam Warning: Hang Up, Don’t Pay

The Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Office is warning community members about an increase in fraudulent phone calls where scammers pose as officials and attempt to pressure victims into paying money.

In these scams, callers claim you owe fines, missed tolls, or face arrest unless you make an immediate payment through gift cards, wire transfers, or electronic apps. These calls can sound convincing, but they are fraudulent. The Sheriff’s Office will never demand payment over the phone, request gift cards, or threaten arrest for unpaid fines.

If you receive a suspicious call:

  • Hang up immediately.
  • Do not send money or share personal information.
  • Call the Sheriff’s Office to verify.

“These scammers rely on fear and urgency to trick people into handing over money,” said Chief Deputy Brad Welch. “We want our community to know they always have the right to hang up and call us directly to confirm whether the call is legitimate.”

You can reach the Sheriff’s Office Communications Center at any time of the day or night at (805) 683-2724.

You are encouraged to share this warning with family, friends, and neighbors—especially seniors, who are often targeted by these schemes.

Another Darn Good Time at the 2025 Goleta Dam Dinner

Watch Video Recap and View Photo Album

Around 350 people enjoyed the #BestDamDinner they ever had at beautiful Lake Los Carneros in Goleta on Saturday, August 16, 2025. The weather was perfect for the scenic event that went from 4:00 p.m. till 7:00 p.m.

Whether you were able to make it or not, we hope you will take a moment to see why this event is so darn special. Check out our video recap and view the photo album. As always, people had fun capturing the moment by taking a photo with a Dam Dinner frame.

Mayor Paula Perotte said, “We are so lucky to have this incredible place in Goleta to gather for this free community event. It was wonderful to see so many neighbors hanging out together and people making new friends as well. This just may have been the best year yet.”

Whether they brought their own picnic dinner or purchased food from A/R Catering, attendees found a spot at the long community table decorated with yellow and blue checkered tablecloths. Each seat had a complimentary Go Green Goleta reusable cutlery set for attendees to take home and a lucky few won a succulent created by Devereaux CA and sponsored by the Fuel Depot and Point Market.

Bluegrass group the Salt Martians have performed at this event for many years and entertained the audience with live music. Free face painting, corn hole and a visit to the Goleta Valley Library Bookvan kept the young attendees occupied. Kona Ice served up more than 250 complimentary snow cones to smiling faces.

This was the first year the Goleta Valley Library Bookvan has been at the Dam Dinner, but judging from its popularity, it won’t be the last. Another first for the event was a Bike Valet staffed by MOVE Santa Barbara County.

Thanks to everyone who attended, including our Goleta City Council, Assemblymember Gregg Hart and Santa Barbara County Superintendent of Schools, Susan Salcido.

A big thanks to the Goleta Valley Historical Society for partnering with the City of Goleta once again to put on the event. A special thanks to Pete Wolf with Big Hammer Lures for helping to plan, set up and clean-up the event, and for creating the yearly Dam Dinner T-shirt.

Thanks to Creekside Restaurant and the Santa Barbara South Coast Chamber of Commerce for sharing their tablecloths and to the Water Store for donating water to keep everyone hydrated. As always, thanks to MarBorg for donating the bathrooms, handwashing stations, and trash and recycle bins.

We appreciate everyone who is a part of making this event so memorable each year. We are already looking forward to the 2026 Dam Dinner and hope to see you there.

Plant Trees at Ellwood Mesa for Monarch Butterfly Season

Monthly Volunteer Opportunities through December

Help welcome back the monarchs to Ellwood Mesa! Community members are invited to come plant trees and native plants that will provide food and shelter for overwintering monarch butterflies. The first Saturday volunteer day of the season just happened on August 30; more opportunities are taking place each month through December. You are encouraged to participate in as many days as you would like. Complete all five days and earn a limited-edition Ellwood Mesa T-shirt!

Mark your calendars for upcoming Saturday Volunteer Days from 9:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m.:

  • September 27
  • October 25
  • November 15
  • December 6

A big thank you to the 84 volunteers who came out to the first volunteer day of the fall and planted 41 new trees! Participants rolled up their sleeves to dig, plant, drive in support poles, and give each tree a good first watering. Many different local organizations were represented, including Brownie Troop #55548, the Goleta Rotary Club, Ellwood Elementary, Althouse and Meade, Laguna Blanca, and UCSB. From here, the trees will be lovingly cared for by UC Santa Barbara’s Cheadle Center and the City of Goleta’s team to help them thrive.

These volunteer events are part of a larger conservation effort to restore monarch habitat at Ellwood Mesa—one of the most important overwintering sites for Western monarchs. With butterfly populations declining due to drought and extreme weather, this project will plant hundreds of trees and thousands of native plants to create the shelter monarchs need to survive. Your help makes it possible.

How to Get Involved: Bring a friend and help plant a tree that will provide shade for monarchs and people alike for generations. Volunteers will meet at the Main Grove on Saturdays at 9:00 a.m. Park at the Sperling Preserve (across from Ellwood Elementary) and allow 10-15 minutes to walk to the Main Grove (meeting location may change so stay tuned for updates by email).

What to Bring: Comfortable shoes, a water bottle, sunscreen, snacks, and gloves (if you have them). Tools will be provided.

Sign Up to Volunteer Here

About Ellwood Mesa: Ellwood Mesa has been facing challenges such as drought and storms, which have damaged the trees that monarchs depend on for shelter. This nationally-significant restoration project will contribute to a healthier habitat for both monarchs and the community. For additional details, visit the project page: www.cityofgoleta.org/ellwood-now.
